Why Vegans Need To Go To Mexico City
(CDMX)
When I first started eating a plant-based diet, I wondered how that would compete with my traveling. I decided simply - when I traveled, I would make exceptions. And so over the next few years, I continued to travel, and what I found was that basically everywhere I went, I could find an incredible array of vegan food, and traditional food, at that. But despite all my travel, there was one place that stood out as best in the world - my second home, Mexico City!So I remember when I first decided to eat plant-based, I was actually living in Mexico City. And I remember my Mexican friends making fun of me - how are you gonna be in Mexico without eating a good taco? And at first they were right - besides the occasional taco made from mushrooms, I felt like I was really missing out on the authentic food experience in a country famous for its cuisine. That is until one day a friend wrote to me saying ‘dude, I’ve been going to this amazing taco stand for two months and I just realized it's vegan. You have to go!’These tacos blew me away - it’s like I was eating real tacos al pastor. And it wasn’t just me saying it, like I said, my friend thought they were ‘the regular’ ones the whole time. The more I stayed in Mexico City, the more I stumbled upon all sorts of vegan tacos - seafood tacos, Japanese-style tacos, curry-style tacos, cactus-based tacos - I was eating more types of tacos than ever! But it's not just tacos. You can find quesadillas, mole, pozole, burritos, chilaquiles - all vegan, all bursting with flavor. And that’s the thing about Mexico - we are creative people - you can hear that in the richness of our Spanish, in the art we put together, and of course, in the way we put food together. We are world class chefs for a reason - and that doesn’t stop just because there isn’t any meat.

What Makes This CDMX Experience Different
Over the last decade, CDMX has seen a massive influx of tourists as people become have become more aware of the lush, concrete jungle with magic at every turn. With that, the restaurant scene and food offering has grown to match the demand of people coming to try authentic Mexican flavors. And that includes the vegan food. You see, when I first went vegan in 2020, I was in CDMX, so I looked at the lists of the 'Top 10 Vegan Places in CDMX'. I remember I went to a few restaurants, and they were ok. But nothing special. But that was years ago - and like you said, the vegan scene has transformed enormously since then, right? That's where the problem lies. Despite the vegan scene being unrecognizable today versus 2020, the recommendation lists you find online have not changed to reflect that. How do I know? I'm constantly running into tourists who are visiting CDMX for the first time, and I notice the places they have on their itineraries are all from these outdated lists. And honestly, these restaurants just don't reflect the true extravagance of the vegan experience in Mexico City. It's like biting into that vegan cheese alternative from ten years ago, smiling through the bits that are stuck to your teeth, and saying 'yuuuuuum! This is so good!'The truth is, since 2020, I've never set foot in those places, not because they aren't good, but because what's out there is so much better.During my time living and going back to Mexico City, I've been shown the hidden gems by the locals, met restaurant owners, I've done my own taste tests, and every time I'm there, there are even new spots my friends insist I check out - and I want to share all that with y'all!

What are your credentials? Why should I travel with you?
I have been vegan for six and a half years, and in that time I've traveled to over 15 countries. I've done planes, road trips, train rides, and I understand that traveling is more than just looking up restaurants on Happy Cow - it's what are you going to eat on the way there? How can I communicate my dietary needs to the locals? How can I make sure I am not just surviving, but thriving and trying the traditional food? There's a lot to consider, and that's the expertise I'm bringing to this experience.

Is Mexico City safe?
Yes! Don’t forget that it’s a massive city that welcomes millions of international tourists every year, and you’ll see local families enjoying time with their kids out on the streets even hours after the sun has gone down. Like most big cities, there are areas that are less safe than others, but we will only ever be in the safe parts.
